Succulents & Cactus

Both Indoor and outdoor

Succulents & Cactus

Succulents and cacti are popular types of plants known for their unique adaptations to arid environments. Both belong to the family of plants that store water in their leaves, stems, or roots, allowing them to thrive in dry conditions.

Succulents: These are plants that have thick, fleshy parts that can retain water. They are found in various families and can have a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colors.

Cacti: Cacti are a specific subset of succulents that belong to the family Cactaceae. They are characterized by their spines, which are modified leaves, and their ability to thrive in extremely dry environments.

Differences Between Succulents and Cacti

Family: All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. Cacti belong to a specific family, while succulents can belong to multiple families.

Spines: Cacti typically have spines, while succulents may have leaves or other structures that do not have spines.

Areoles: Cacti have areoles, which are small, cushion-like structures from which spines, flowers, and new branches grow. Succulents do not have areoles.

  • What kind of light do they need? Bright, direct sunlight for at least a few hours daily. They thrive in sunny locations indoors and outdoors.

  • How often should I water them? Water only when the soil is completely dry—typically every two weeks in summer and less in winter.

  • What temperature is ideal? 20°C - 30°C (68°F - 86°F).

  • Do they need humidity? No, succulents prefer low-humidity environments and thrive in dry air.

  • Why are my succulents stretching and looking leggy? Insufficient sunlight causes them to stretch toward a light source.
